We wanted to put a family tree as well as complete genealogical information on the web site. Unfortunately, identity theives can find information needed to gain access to most people's financial, medical, retirement benefits, and insurance web sites in family trees and genealogical databases. This includes date of birth, mother's maiden name, place of birth, etc.
Our Genealogy software provides a tool to produce a web page that answers this. It displays all information for deceased people, but hides all details for the living. It has an option to hide or show names. Hiding names is good because someone would be able to discern your mother's maiden name. But if you hide the names, they put the word "LIVING" in place of the name and details. As you go down the decendents where most are living, it gets ridiculous: "LIVING married LIVING and had two children: LIVING, and LIVING."
We opted for now to show names. With that decision, we decided to also go ahead and include a pictorial family tree.
